A theatrical wedding is hoped to be the first of many in the coming years
The newest wedding venue in Coventry isn’t a renovated stately home or a posh new events centre – but it could just be the perfect place to host that special day.
Located near the city centre, the Albany Theatre hosted its very first wedding today, Saturday, July 27, a Wizard of Oz-themed ceremony between the theatre’s events co-ordinator Julia Butler and her husband Tom.
It may not have the Instagram appeal from the outside but its location near Coventry railway station and the capacity of the venue makes it an appealing option.
For Julia and Tom, the wedding had an extra significance, with Julia having performed there since she was a child.
“I was that little girl who used to dance on this stage with a dance school in Coventry,” she said. “I did all my shows here and two years ago, I got a job as an events co-ordinator.
“I love musical theatre. I used to work as a professional dancer back in the day, so that is one of my big passions.”
Julia said weddings were a way of opening the theatre up to even more people in the community. She said: “With all of this, it opens up a massive opportunity for further hires and for more people to come here and experience the theatre. You might have a passion for theatre, you might not, but we’re a very open and inclusive venue which is there for you to put your stamp on and make what you want it to be.”
The wedding had a toastmaster dressed as the Wizard of Oz, a game show called ‘the Masked Wedding Singer’ based on the hit TV show, and a wealth of decorations to give it a theatrical feel. More than 120 guests were due to attend from as far away as France and New York.
Julia said: “It’s scary but also so exciting and the fact the theatre has allowed us to do this means we’re really grateful.”
